Origin Story: Scholars believe that Maharshi Panini was born in the town of Shalatura, near the banks of the Sindhu River, close to present-day Lahore in Pakistan. Many experts estimate he was born around 520 BCE, and passed away in 460 BCE. Very little is known about his personal life, though his mother is believed to have been named Dakshi.
Scholarly Contributions: The largest and most important work of Panini is a book called Ashtadhyayi on Sanskrit grammar, meaning "Eight Chapters". Overall, the book contains 3,959 sutras, rules that explain Sanskrit grammar and the structure of Sanskrit words and sentences in a scientific way. Panini created a very organized way to explain the sounds of the Sanskrit language and how words are formed.
Panini's Ashtadhyayi has three important helper texts: the Shiva Sutras (fourteen verses listing the sounds of Sanskrit, said to have been revealed to Panini by Lord Shiva), and the Dhatupatha and Ganapatha, which help with verb roots and word groups. Panini also referenced at least 16 earlier grammarians, showing that grammar was already a serious subject in ancient India.
